Bonnyton Thistle was founded in 1912, giving the club more than a century of history in Kilmarnock. Its roots were predominantly in youth and amateur football, which fits really nicely with the pathway you’re now showing on the Teams page.

Youth football and player development have long been at the heart of Bonnyton Thistle. Generations of young players have represented the club, with Bonnyton providing a place to learn the game, develop as a player and enjoy being part of a team.

The club transformed a former bowling green and pavilion at Warwickhill Road into a dedicated football facility, creating an all weather playing surface supported by floodlights and changing facilities. It became another important step in developing the infrastructure available to Bonnyton players and the wider community.

In 2017, Bonnyton Thistle took a major step forward by entering senior football and joining the South of Scotland Football League. The move marked an exciting new chapter for a club traditionally rooted in youth football and coincided with the development of Townholm as the home of the senior side.

The 2018/19 season brought silverware to Bonnyton Thistle, with the club lifting both the Southern Counties Challenge Cup and the Alba Cup. It was an important early achievement following Bonnyton’s move into senior football and a memorable chapter in the club’s history.

Another important milestone arrived in 2020 when Bonnyton Thistle became a founder member of the West of Scotland Football League. The move established the senior side within the developing West of Scotland football pyramid and began the next stage of the club’s journey.

Bonnyton’s commitment to player development has helped players progress beyond the club and into professional football. Former Bonnyton players include Craig Conway, Alan Mahood, John Robertson, Neil McGowan, Derek Stillie and Sam McCloskey, forming part of a proud tradition of developing local talent.

Today, Bonnyton Thistle provides opportunities from Mini Kickers and youth football through to development and senior level. While the club has changed considerably since 1912, the principle at its heart remains the same: creating opportunities for people to play, develop and enjoy football.
